Cars, Dogs & Brass Rings

Categories: Focus

“Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.” (See Colossians 3:1-2) Don’t worry about getting that new car. What will that gain you? Earthlings’ envy? Is that what this passage is about? Kinda sorta, but not really. If you need a new car, get a new car. But get it because you need it – or really if you just want it. But, don’t get it just to get another thing to impress other people and make your social status go up a peg. Don’t do it to gain a few more Facebook friends or Twitter followers. If you’re a believer in Jesus, then your target should be raised much higher than this place. In the end, who cares what people think about you, it’s about what they think of your message. You should be eyeballing Heaven and aiming to do what pleases God way more than what temporarily satisfies your fleshly pangs and that of others. This doesn’t mean quit trying to succeed and stop reaching for that brass ring. This just means adjust your priorities a little to where Jesus is first and the brass ring is second. And when you do grab that brass ring and are super successful, you let everybody and their dog know that Jesus is the reason you’re there.
