“Hear, my son, your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching; Indeed, they are a graceful wreath to your head and ornaments about your neck.” (See Proverbs 1:8-9) As a father, I read this first and think, “Right on, Bible! You tell those kids!” However, this is speaking to all the children of God, so that groups me right in there with the lot of ‘em. It backs me up into a state of obedience where I no longer instruct, but am instructed. It gets a little tricky when looking at it through a NT versus the OT type of mindset, of which we are, in and through Christ, free from the restraints of sin to which these verses set up a type of protection from. Nevertheless, sin is still out there and we, as followers of the Almighty, know the right way to walk because we have been shown it many times. To neglect it now becomes foolishness on our parts and sets us up for present and future failure. So as to demonstrate our hatred for sin and how it destroys things, let us not depart from the right path nor abandon the Godly teachings our parents on earth, and our Parent in Heaven, have taught us. We will reap a much more bountiful harvest this way.
